How- HOW? Jewelry is currently based out of Kenya and we have about 30 women making jewelry, most of them are widows living with HIV/AIDS or are caring for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Our HOW? Jewelry Kenya Coordinator is Keziah Murugi, she assists the women, teaches them new jewelry samples, and also provides much needed emotional support. We provide the supplies and materials needed for the jewelry and each woman will make varying pieces of jewelry.
Each woman is paid fair market value for their jewelry. The wonderful thing about how we operate is each woman is paid immediately for their work. So she receives an instant income, rather than having to wait until the piece sells back in North America.
We receive multiple different jewelry shipments throughout the year so our inventory always varies. The jewelry is handmade which means that each piece is especially unique and we may only have 1 or 2 pieces of some styles. For this reason when you shop our online store you are not seeing our entire inventory. We have many many more pieces in stock. If you would like to see more of our inventory and some of our more unique pieces please consider hosting a HOW? Jewelry Home Party.
Why—Our question is more like “why wouldn’t we?” We passionately believe that one by one we each have the ability to make a difference in our world. We believe that those of us with resources, skills and financial capabilities should re-invest in the lives of others. And at HOW? Jewelry that is just what we are doing.
One by one we want to come alongside the women and offer job opportunities and emotional support. Many of our women have or are currently facing desperate situations and trying to just survive. Many were living on less than a dollar a day before HOW? Jewelry and most of them are widows living with HIV/AIDS.
Poverty is a vicious enemy and destroys people’s lives both physically and emotionally. Those who bear the heaviest weight of poverty are women and children. This is why we focus on women in hopes that by empowering a woman and giving her an income and confidence we can save children.
And by empowering women and saving children we can begin to fight poverty.
